Q: what the 3-pin connector on the back is for??

Greg The white 3 pin connector is for either stereo line output or speaker amp positive output pin. Pin 1 is SPP (Speaker amp positive), pin 2 is ground and pin 3 is SPN (speaker amp negative). You could connect a small speaker across pins 1 and 3 for mono audio out, however installing the metal shell will mean you cannot hear the speaker.
